I twisted the lid of the jar again, this time with a little more force. It didn’t budge. I tried tapping it on the edge of the counter. Nothing. I ran it under hot water, hoping this would do the trick. Still nothing.

Frustration started to creep in.

I had just spent two days in a windowless, smelly meeting room in the basement of an old hotel. What got me through the last few hours of the training was the thought of treating myself to pasta with a delicious sauce of fresh tomatoes for dinner.

Reluctantly I took the pot of hot oil and sizzling garlic off the stove, grabbed the jar of tomatoes and knocked on my neighbour’s door – no answer. I tried another 3 doors on my floor but of course, nobody was home.

Nooooooo! This can’t be happening today!

It might sound like I was overreacting. But these were no ordinary, store-bought tomatoes. These were special tomatoes bottled by an old friend and given to me over a year ago. I had been saving them for a special meal and had decided that today was the day.

Not wanting to give up yet, I tried one more time. I ran the jar under the hot water again, simultaneously tapping it on the sink a few times. Suddenly I heard the familiar “pop” of the jar lid. I pumped my fist in the air and did a happy dance in front of the stove!

And just as I was about to pour the tomatoes into the pot, a funny smell hit my nose.

Don’t tell me…

I felt my heart start to sink. Dipping my baby finger in the jar, I took a little taste.

The tomatoes had gone off.

And suddenly it hit me. Why on earth did I wait for a year to open this jar of tomatoes? I mean I saw the jar every time I opened my pantry door…for OVER A YEAR! What was I waiting for?

Then the thought, What else have I been “saving” for when the perfect time comes?

When I fall in love again, I’ll open that bottle of ice wine in my fridge. When I have that perfect evening, I’ll light those new scented candles.  When the blog post is absolutely perfect, I’ll publish it.

I’d like to think that I’m pretty good at doing what I want to do now instead of waiting for the right conditions to be present. And I know I can do better. So tonight, I’m cracking open the bottle of ice wine and lighting those candles.  As for that blog post?  You’re reading it ;-).

What’s something you can do today that you’ve been saving for “the right time”?
